Dasakam 34  Gauthama  saapam.- The curse  of sage Gauthama

(those Brahmins hearing that  Gauthama is praised  in DEva loka   send a cow   which was about to die   to his hermitage and accused him of killing a cow..The sage cursed them saying that   all of them should get engaged   in evil  despicable acts., The sage then went and approached Goddess  Gayathri, When the Brahmins became sad and repentant , the sage told them that   when Lord Krishna is born in the world, if theygo and salute him, the curse   will go away. This also is a part of Chapter 9 of book 12 of devi Bhagwatha)

1,Swavasbhir  Gauthama keerthibhir uchai,

Geetha sabhasu tridasai  sadethim

Aakarnya   devarshimukhaath  kruthagnaa,

Dwijaa  babhoova  kila sershya chitha.

1.Those   Brahmins who heard    from sage Narada,

That in the assembly of devas    who live in heaven,

The fame of sage  Gauthama  is sung in loud  voice ,

Became thankless and developed jealousy in their mind

2,Thaitr mayayaa  aasannamruthi  kruthaa  gau,

Saa preshithaa   gauthama  homa  salaam,

Agaan  muner  juhwath  yeva vahnou,

Hunkara  maathrena papaatha chorvtaath.

2.Using illusion   they created    a cow , which was,

About to die and sent it to the place of conduct,

Of Homa of sage Gauthama and that sage  ,

And went on shouting thatGauthama killed a cow,

Who was doing  Homa in fire, said , “Hum”,

And by that manthra  itself it died and fell down.

3.Hathaa hathaa  gauriha   gauthamena-,

Tyucchair  dwijaa prochya munim  ninindhu ,

Sa choddha kopa   pralayaanalaabha-,

Sthaan  raktha nethra prapannuvaacha.

3,The Brahmins  started  insulting the sage,

By shouting loudly   “He killed, killed”,
That sage   whose eyes  turned red  due to anger,

Cursed  and told them like the  fire in deluge.

4,Vrutheshu yajnesgu  nivruthi sastre-,

Shwapi dwijaa vo  vimukhathwamasthu,

Nishiddha karmaacharane rathaa stha ,

Sthriya prajaa  vo api thadhaa bhavanthu,

4 Oh Brahmins  , let you start  neglecting,

Penances, Yajnas   and sastras preaching salvation,

Let you be interested in doing    forbidden  acts ,

Let the same thing happen to your women and children.

5.SAth sangamo  maasthu jagat jananyaa,

Kadhamruthe von a  rathi  khalu syaath ,

Paashandakaapaali ka vruthi paapai,

Peedaa  bhavedh vo narakeshu nithyam.

5.Let you not get good religious company, let you,

Lose interest in the nectar  like stories of  mother of universe,

Let you all  become Pashandas  and kapalikas ,

Who curse  God   and  daily suffer   in  hell

6.Ukthwaivamaaryo minirethya gaaya-,

Thrayaakhyam  krupaardro bhaathim nanaama,

Thwamathda  dugdham bujagaya   datham,

Dathu sadaaanathadhameva vidhi,

6.After telling all these   that  sage went near ,

You who is  merciful  and has   the  name of Gayathri,

And saluted you and you told him that, “the milk  ,

Given to a snake, would always   cause harm to the  giver.

7.Sadedrusi karma gathirmaharshe ,

SAnthim  bhaja swam thapa yeva  rakshaa,

Maa krupyathamevam rishir  nisamya,

Mahaanuthaa paardramaanaa  babhoova.

7.”Oh  great sage, the way of fate  is always ,

Like this and so become peaceful  and protect  ,

Your own Thapas and do not get angry”,

Hearing this the  sage   started  repenting  and felt sad,

8,SApthaa  dwijaa  vismrutha  veda  manthraa ,

Labdhaa  vivekam  miLithaa munim tham,

Praapthaa praseedhethi muhur vadhantho,

Nathwaa  trapaanamra mukhaa  sthishatan.

8.The Brahmins    who were cursed forgot  ,

All the Veda  manthras and  at the end  ,

Got back their wisdom, surrendered to the sage ,

And again and again ask  for pardon ,

And stood    before   him with a bent head.

9.Krupardri nethri muniraaha na syaan-,

Mrushaa vacho may  narake   vasetha,

Jaayeha vishnur bhuvi Krishna naamaa,

Vandetha tham  saapa vimochanaartham,

9.That sage   whose   eyes  became    wet with mercy,

Told them, “My words    would not   go waste, and so,

Live in the hell, till Lord Vishnu  is  born in the earth,

With name of Krishna and then salute him for getting rid of curse.

10.Swapapamukthyartha manantha  sakthim,

DEvim  sadaa  dhyayath   bhakthi poothaa,

SArvathra   bhooyath  shubha mithyudeerya,

Gayathri dadhyo bhavathim maharshi,

10.“For getting  rid  of your own sins, always  ,

Meditate on the Goddess  with endless  power,

After  becoming clean by devotion and let  good,

Happen to you”, saying like this Oh Goddess  Gayatri,

That  sage   started  meditating  on you.

11.Munchaani  maa vaak saramanya chithe  ,

Kruthgnathaa maa asthu mammantharange ,

Nindaani maa sajjanamesha  bheethom

Bhavani  paapaadh Varade   Namasthe.

11.Let me not shoot  the arrow  of words,

At the  mind of others and let   not there be,

The sin of thanklessness  forever in my mind,

Let me not   say evil words  against good people,

Oh BHavani , let me be  one who is always  ,

Scared  of  sins,Hey giver of boons, my salutations.
