Dasakam 27- Sathakshi avatharam. –Incarnation as hundred
eyed goddess.
(There was an ASura called Durgama, who got by
thapas from Brahma all manthras both in
the Vedas and outside it.Due to losing Vedas as well as manthras.human beings
became weak and devas did not get
anything.They went and his themselves in caves and foreasts. Due to thirst all
of them reached Himalayas and started praying to the Goddess.You shed tears
from your hundred eyes for nine days..All the water bodies of world were
filled with water. The Asura came to war with you and he was killed. Due
to his chanting of Vedas and giving up
his life in front of you, he got salvation.The people gi ot back the Vedas .This
story is told in chapter number 28 of the seventh book of Devi BHagawatham.)

1.Daithya puraa
kaschan durgamaakhyaa,
Prasaadhidath
padma bhavath thapobhi,
Avaidhikam
vaidika mapya guhyaan,
Manthram samastham
divisha jjayaishi.
1.In olden times an asura called Durgama,
With a desire to
win over all devas , got,
All manthras
which are in all Vedas ,
And also outside Vedas
from Lord Brahma
2.Vede
gruhithe dithijena vipaa,
Sruthisthiraa
vismrutha Veda manthraa,
Saandhyayani karmaanyapi
naiva chakru,
Kshithsthva vedaadhyayanaa babhoova.
2.When the
Vedas were learnt
by the asura,
The Brahmins who
had learnt Vedas ,
Completely forgot
what they have learnt,
And did not do
rituals of dawn, noon and dusk,
And due to it
learning of Vedas disappeared from earth
3.Hrutheshu
manthreshvakhileshu poojaa-,
Yajnaadho
bhoomou na krutham manushyai,
Suraa
asakthasthadha laabha khinna,
Daithyena yudhe
balinaa jithaascha.
3.Due to all
the manthras being
stolen from earth,
Worship and Yajna
were not done by human beings,
And due to their non availability devas
became weak ,
And that stong
Asura defeated them in war.
4.Thyakthwaa
dhivam they giri gahvareshu,
Nileeya
varshaani bahooni ninyu,
Vrushterabhaavaad
dharani cha sushkaa ,
Jalaasayaa thrash
nipeedithaabhooth.
4.They all deserted
the heavens and went ,
In to hiding in
mountains as well as caves,
And spent several years
there and the earth,
Due to lack of rain and drying of ponds ,
Suffered a lot
due to great thirst.
5,Sarva thrutarthascha himadrimethya,
Thvaan dhyaanapujaanuthirbhajantha,
Prasaadhayaamaa sura naika koti-,
Brahmanda
karthreem akhilaarthi hanthreem,
5.All those
people suffering from
thirst went,
To the Himalayas and using meditation
, worship,
And prayer served
you who had created several,
Hundred crores of
universe and one who destroys all sorrow.
6.Drushtaa
dyayardrakshi sathaa thwamebhi,
Krupaasru varsharnava rathramoorvyaam,
Jalaasayaanpoorna jalamscha kathdha ,
Janaa sathakshithyabhidhaam dhadhusthe
6.You whose
hundred eyes were wet
with mercy,
Were seen by them and you shed such tears
for nine nights,
And due to that she filled up all lakes with those tears,
And those people decided to call her “Sathakshi(hundred eyed one)”
7.Kshuth peedithaanaam
cha charaacharanaam,
Sarvathra nanavidhamannamishtam,
Swadhooni
moolaani phalaani chaadhaa,
Sakambareethi
pradhithaa thathobhoo.
7.Then you gave various
desirable types of food,
As well as very
tasty fruits and roots
To all the
beings which were suffering due to hunger ,
And because of
that you became famous as SAkambari(Nourisher
using herbs)
8.Daithyasthu vijnaaya samasthamasthra-,
Sasthrai
sasainya praharan vapusthe ,
Ranaangane sayaka
viddha gaathra,
SAsbdhamoorvayaa
tharuvath papaathaa
8.When the Asura
came to know of everything,
He hit you with arrows
as well as other weapons,
And in the war
field , after being pierced
,
By your arrows which broke his body,
He fell like a
huge cut tree.
9.Sa chasuraathmaa khalu
veda manthraan,
Chiram
pamsthavaamabhi veekshamanaa,
Gathayuraavisya parathmani thaw-,
YYvaapa mukthim
mishathaam suraanaam.
9.Due to that
Asura chanting for a long time,
Veda manthras, due to his leaving his soul ,
While you were
watching, when the Devas,
Were watching he mingled in you who is a divine soul.
10.Vedaan
hruthaanabjabhavaanane thwam,
Punaschanikshipya
jagatsurakshaam,
Kruthwaa nuthaa deva ganair naraischa,
Thushtaa thirobhoo
karunardra nethraa
10.Then you
reinstated the stolen Vedas on Brahma’s face,
And protected the
universe well and when
You were being praised
by the Devas and human beings
You became very happy and disappeared with mercy filled eyes
11.Bhakthasya vai
durgathi nasini thwam,
Sukhapradhaa durgamahanthri maathaa,
Durgathi
naamnaa vidhithaa cha
loke,
Vichithra roopasthava
devi leelaa.
11.Oh destroyer of
Durgama Oh mother , you are,
The only one who destroys the bad fate of your devotees,
The one who gives him pleasure and one who is well known.
As Durga and your sports are wonderful.
12.Kopyasthi
chithe mamadurgamoyam,
Jnathasthvayaa
naiva mayaa thu devi,
Ya sathatham druhyaathimay thamaasu ,
Samhruthya maam raksha namo namsthe.
12.In my mind
there lives a Durgama,
And though you know him but not me,
But he keeps on
troubling me, Please ,
Destroy him and
save me.My salutations to you.
