Dasakam 20   Devaki  Puthra  Vadham-the killing of devaki’s sons

(Devaki got married to Vasudeva  and  the  voice from sky   warned Kamsa that he would be killed   by  the eighth son of Devaki.Though initially  her first children were not killed by Kamsa , later    as per the advice of Sage Narada he killed all her    first  six children of Devaki.  This is given in   chapter 21 of the Book 4 of devi Mahathmyam.)

1.Adhoru punye madhura pure thu,

Vibhooshithe  moukthika maalikaabhi,

Sri devaki   soura   vivaha   range,

SArvai  srutham  vyoma   vacha sphutardham.

1.Afterwards  in the blessed   city of Mathura,

Decorated  by garlands   of pearls , on the stage ,

Of the marriage   of Vasudeva   and Devaki,

A clear  message    from the   sky   was j heard. 

2.Avehi  bho  DEvaki nandanaaya,

Suthoshtama   kamsa   thavanthaka syaath,

Sruthvethi   thaam  hanthumasim dadhaana,

Kaso  nirudho  vasu deva  mukhyai.

2.Oh Kamsa  please understand, the eighth son,

Of Devaki  would   be your killer and hearing this,

Kamsa took his sword to kill her but was,

Prevented   by Vasudeva   and others.

3. Adhaa aaha  souri  srunu kamsa  puthraan,

Dadhaami thesyaa  sapadham karomi,

Yethadh vacho  may   vyabhichayathi  chen,

Marg poorvajaatahaa  narake   pathanthu.

3.Later  Vasudeva told, “Hey Kamsa, please  hear,

I  am taking an oath   that I would give all her sons to you ,

And if my word   is not  properly followed,

Let  all my ancestors    reach hell.

4.Sraddhaya sarair  vachanam prasaantha,

Sthaam  DEvakim  bhojapathir  mumocha,

Sarve  cha thushtaaagaryaam,

Thou  dampathi  choshathuratha modham.

4.After  hearing the   words  of Vasudeva   carefully,

Kamsa   gave   freedom to    Devaki  and,

Duee to this  all the   Yadhavas   were happy,

And that couple    stayed  in that   city with joy.

5.Kaale sathi  puthramasootha thatha  ,

Kamsaaya  nissanga madhaath   sutham   swam,

Hanthaa  na meyam  sisur ithyudheerya,

Tham  prathya death bhoja  pathischa   thasmai.

5. With passing  of time   that  virtuous  lady  .

Gave birth to sons  and Vasudeva   without hesitation,

Handed  over his son  to the Kamsa and that Kamsa,

Returned the baby saying  that baby was not his death.

6.Adhaasu   bhoobhara  vinasanaakhyaa,

Thwan nataka prekshana   kouthukena

Sri Narada   sarva   vidhethya kamsa-,

Madrusya haasam  sakalam jagaadha.

6.After that  , the all knowing sage Narada immediately,

With  a desire to see  your drama  of destruction of  load of earth,

Approached  Kamsa without   even showing  a smile,

Having understood   everything .

7.THwam bhoopa daithya khalu kala nemir,

Jagat prasidho   harinaa   hathascha,

THathothra jaathosi   suraa   harischa  ,

THwam  hanthu michanthyadhunaa api  sathrum,

7.Oh king, you are   the world famous   asura   called Kalanemi,

And you were  killed   by Lord   Vishnu.

And after  that   you are  born here and  Lord Vishnu ,

Along with Devas  want  to kill you   as  you are   their enemy.

8.DEvasthadartha nara roopinothra,

Vruje  cha  jathaa   vasu deva  mukhyaa,

Nandadayascha tridasaa  yime  na,

Visrumbaneeyaa   na cha   bandhavaasthe  .

8.The devas   for that purpose    have been born,

In this Vruja Bhoomi as men, Vasudeva   and others,

AS well as Nandagopa and I others      are only devas,

You should not believe them  as they are not your relatives.

9.THwam  Vyoma vanim  smara   devakasya,

Puthryaa  suthe ashtamathaam  gatha   san,

Sa thwaam   nihanthaa  harireva   sathru,

Ralpopi   nipekshya ithiyethe hi,

9.You recollect   the voice    from the sky,

It is that Vishnu only   who is going   ,

To come as    the eighth   son, Has it not been told,

That  even if the   enemy   is small   we should not neglect.

10.Sarvathmajaanaam  nrupa meLane asya,

SArve ashtama syu  pradhame cha   sarve  ,

Maayaavinam   vidhi harim  sadethi,

Gathe   munou krodhamiyaya   kamsa.

10.Oh king , if all    her   sons  join together  ,

All of them would become eighth as also first,

You have  to always   assume that  Vishnu  is a magician,”

When the  king told him  like this   and departed  Kamsa  became  angry.

11.They Devakisoonumaram  jagaana,

Karagruhe   thaam   pathimapya bandhanaath,

Thayo suthaan shad  khalu   jathamathraan,

Hathwaa  krutham swam hithameva  mene,

11.And he killed  Devaki’s baby immediately ,

And he imprisoned    her and her husband,

He also killed   all her six sons  ,

Believing that it would be good   for his future

12,Kayena vachaa mansenryair vaa,

Maa jathu paapam  karavani devi,

Mamasthu sathkarmarethi priyasthe,

Bhavani bhaktham   Maam Namasthe.

12, I should   not commit  any sins .

Either by my body, words or mind,

Let me be interested in doing good things,

Oh Goddess , Oh Bhavani , I should become   dear to you,

Please  make me as  your devotee,My salutations to you.
