Mahishasura vadham –Deva Sthuthi – Killing of Mahishasura and prayer by Devas,
(IN this chapter the killing of Mahishasura and consequent prayers of the devas
is described, These are given in chapters 16-20 of book 5 of the Devi

1.Devi thwayaa
bhaskaladurmukhadhi,
Daithyeshu
veereshu rane hatheshu,
Sadvakruthasthvaana
anunethi kamo,
Megha prayathno
Mahishaschu kopa.
1.Oh Goddess when
the ASuras Bhaskala ,
And Durmukha and
others were killed by you,
Mahishasura wanted
to make you follow him,
By telling pleasing
words and,
When he
failed he became angry.
2.Thwaam kama roopa kurapucha srungair,
Naanaasthra sasthrasischa brusam praharthaa ,
Garjjan vinindhan
prahasan darithrim,
Prakampayam schaasuraraad yuyodhaa.
2,That Asura who could change to any form he desires,
Hit you with
hoofs , tail and horn
as well as weapons,
He fought the war by roaring , loud laughter ,
By calling you
bad names and making the land shiver.
3.Uparunakshi
madhu pana thushtaa,
Thwam chaarinaa
aremahishasya kantam,
Chithwaa
shiro bhoomithale nipaathya,
RAnanganasthaa vibhudai sthuthaabhoo.
3.But you became
intoxicated by Alcohol,
And your eyes
turned red like red hibiscus flower,
And cut off the
neck of Mahisha and made,
His head fall on the earth and Devas praised you.
4.Mathasthvayaa no vipadhaa nirasthaa,
Asakthyamanyairidhamaddhvuthangi,
Brahmanda sarga
sthithi nasa karthrim,
Kasthvaam jayeth kena
kadham kutho vaa.
4.Oh mother due to you our dangers have been removed,
Oh Goddess with wonderful limbs, this is not possible,
To be done by others
for how can any one win over
you,
Who creates, upkeeps and destroys the universe.
5.Vidhyaa swaroopaasi
mahesi yasmin,
Sa vai pareshaam
sukhadha kavischa,
Thwam varthase
yathra sadhaapya vidhyaa,
Swaroopini sa thathdhama
pasu syaath.
5.Oh great Goddess who is the form of knowledge within us,
Bring s
happiness to all others and also make them poets,
In Persons in whom you
are in the form of ignorance,
You make them the
worst possible idiots.
6.Krupakadaksha sthava devi yasmin,
Parthanthi thasyaaaathmajaavitha dharaa,
Yacchanthi
Soukhyam na pathanthi yasmin,
Tha eve dukham dadathesya
noonam.
6,Oh Godddess, On whomsoever your merciful
,
Glance falls, they would get children wealth and wife,
And they get a pleasant life and on whom it does not
fall,
They would
definitely suffer with great sorrow.
7,Pasyaama
nithyam thava roopamethath,
Kadhaascha naamaani
na keerthayaama,
Namama
moordhnaa pada pankaje they
,
Smarama karunya
maha pravaaham
7.We would also be able to see this divine form of yours,
WE would be able to always sing your names and stories,
We should always
be able to salute you with our
head,
And we should always think about your tide of mercy.
8.THwameva
mathaasi dhivokasaam no,
Naanyaa
dwitheeyaa hitha dhana dakshaa,
Anye suthaa
vaa thava santhi no vaa,
Na rakshithaa nasthvadruthe Mahesi.
8,To us who live
in heaven you are our mother,
There are no second person who grants good
to us,
You may or may
not have any other sons,
But we do not have
any one to protect us.
9.Kva thwam
vayam kwethi vichinthya sarvam,
Kshamasva no
devyaa aparadha jaalam,
Yadha yadhaa no
vipadho bhavanthi,
THadhaa thadhaa
palayasmaan.
9.Where are you?
And where are we?,
Oh Goddess please
think about all these,
And pardon the
net of our mistakes,
And whenever we face danger,
You should [rotect us, protect us.
10.Ithi sthuvathsu
tridaseshu sadhya,
Krupasru nethraiva thiro dhadhaahdha,
THatho jagad
devi vibhoothi poornam,
Babhoova
darmishta samastha jeevam.
10.When the devas
were praying to you thus,
Shedding the
tears of mercy you truly disappeared,
And Oh goddess
from that time this universe ,
Was engulfed in prosperity and all people were following dharma
11.Thvaam samsmareyam
na cha vaa smareyam,
Vipathsu maa vismara maam vimoodam ,
Rudhan
bidalarbhaka vanna kinchith,
Saknoumi
karthu Shubadhe Namasthe.
12, At time of dangers
I might think about you ,
Or not think about you but you should never,
Forget me who is
a fool as I who am crying,
Like a kitten cannot
do anything,
Oh Giver of Good,
my salutations to you.
