Dasakam 2 Hayagreeva
Vadham (Killing of Hayagreeva)
(Once the devas approached lord Vishnu for help
in conducting a Yajna. Due to the
pressure of the bow ., Lord Vishnu’s head got cut and fell in the sea/ As per
the advice of Lord Brahma , the devas
prayed the Goddess. She told them to join a horse’s had on the body of Vishnu.
He woke up and in war killed a
dangerous Rakshasa called Hayagreeva.This occurs in the 5th
chapter of first Skanda of Devi
Bhagawatham.)

1.Raneshu
daithyeshu hatheshu devaa,
Puraa prahrushtaa
saha dathru sarvaa,
Yiyikshavo yajnapathi
vineethaa,
Prepedhire Vishnum anantha veeryam.
1.The devas who had killed the asuras in war earlier,
Became very happy
and with a desire for conducting Yajna,
Along with Lord Shiva
and Lord Brahma, with humility m
Approached Lord
Vishnu of endless valour.
2.Drushtwaa cha nidhra
vasam prabhum tha-,
Madhijya chapagra samapithasyam,
Aascharyamapur vibududhaa na kopi,
Prabodhayath tham
khalu Papa bheethyaa.
2.They saw the lord
under influence of sleep,
Keeping his chin on the stringed bow ,
The devas were
greatly surprised and,
Due to fear of sin , did not wake him up.
3.Hasthedhaaneem ajasrushtavamryaa,
Mukhaarpanaa kunchitha chapa mourvee,
Bhagnaa dhanusha aarjavamaapa sadhya-,
Sthenabhavath
sopi nikrutha kantaa.
3.The string of the bow which was bent by Lord Vishnu,
Due to his face
pushing it down, due to the
white ant hill,
Created by Lord Brahma broke , making the bent bow
straight,
And due to this, he became one whose head was cut.
4.Kaayaath sirassuthpathitham muraare,
Pasyathsu deveshu
papathaa sindhou,
Chetha
suraanaam kadhane nimagnam,
Hahethi sabdha
sumahan aboochcha.
4.The head of the killer of Mura which was thrown up,
Went and fell in to the ocean , when the devas were seeing it,
The mind of all devas
got drowned in great sorrow,
And the huge sound “Alas, alas” rose
from them.
5.Kimathra kruthyam
pathithe Harou na,
Kurma kadham
vethi midho bruvaaNaan,
DEvaan Vidhathaa
aha bhavenna kaaryaa,
Makaranam deivam
aho baleeya.
5.At the time
when the head of Vishnu had fallen,
Devas talked with
each other “What can be done?.
How to do it?” and then Lord Brahma said to them,
“Nothing happens
without cause, alas,
The power of Karma
is indeed great,”
6.Dhyayeth Devi karunadra
chithaam,
Brahmanda
srushtyaadhi ka hethu bhoothaam,
Sarvaani
kaaryaani vidhasyathe na,
Saa sarva sakthaa
sagunaa agunaa cha,
6.”Pray that goddess
who is the cause of creation,
Of all this universe who has a mind melted
due to mercy,
She who has and does not have properties and who,
Is all powerful,would carry out the action needed,”
7.Ithyoochusha
preranayaa vidathru,
Sthavaameva vedaa nunuvu
suraaschaa,
Dhivi syhoithaa
deva ganaam sthvamaaThdha,
Badram bhavedh vo harinee drusena.
7.With the encouragement of Brahma who told like this,
Vedas and Devas
were praying you and you came,
Stood on the sky
and told the group of devas like this,
“ Good would come to you by this Hari who is like this.”
8.Daithyo Hayagreevo
ithi Prasidho,
Mayaiva
dathena vareNa veera,
Vedaan
muneemschaapi hayaasya mathraa,
Vadhyo brusam peedayathi
prabhaavath.
8.”A famous
valorous Rakshasa called Hatagreeva,
Due to the the
power of the boons, given by me ,
Saying that he could be killed only by one
who has a horse’s head,
Is troubling
the sages and Vedas
due to his strength.”
9.Deivena
kruththam Hari seersha Madhya,
Samyojyathaam
vaaji sirosya kaaye,
Thatho Hayagreeva
thaya Murarir,
Daiyam
Hayagreevamaam nihanthaa.
9.The head of Lord Vishnu has got cut due to the will of Fate,
And so join a horse’s head on his
headless body,
And then the killer of Mura in his form of Hayagreeva,
Would kill the
Rakshasa called Hayagreeva swiftly.
10.Thwameva mukthwaa sadayan Thirodhaa-.
Sthwashtraa
kabandhe aswa siro Murare,
Samyojitham pasyathi deva sanghe,
Hayaanana Sri Harir
udhitho Aabhooth.
10.After telling like
this you disappeared,
And THwashtaa
joined a horse’s head to the
headless body,
Of Lord Vishnu and
while devas were seeing
that it has been joined,
Lord Vishnu became
one with a horse’s head
and woke up.
11.Daithyam
Haragreevamahan Hayaasyo,
Rane Murari sthwad
anugrahena,
Sadaa Jagan mangala dhe
thwadheeyaa,
Pathanthu may mooordni krupaa
kadakshaa.
11.Due to your blessing the horse head killer of Mura,
Killed in a war
that Rakshasa called Hayagreeva.
Oh Goddess who
does good to the universe,
Always make your merciful glances fall on my head.
