Dasakam 23  Mahalakshmyavataram  -Incarnation of  mahalakshmi

(Mahishasura got a boon that no male should be able to kill him. All devas were driven away from him. They went to Vishnu ,. Who told that a feminine power should be born out of them..The powers from the trinity, devas, and Indra joined together. She was called Mahalakshmi , who was only yourselves.After fighting she killed Mahisha’s   commander in chief. Chikshura. These   are told in chapters  2-15 of book 5 of the Devi Bhagawatham., In the devi mahathmyan, the   story is told differently . There is no mention of mahisha getting a boon that only a female should kill him .)

1.Rambhasya puthro  Mahishasura Paak,

Theevraisthapobhir   druhimaan  prasannath,

Avadhyathaam  pumbiswapya drushto,

Na may mruthi   syadheethi  cha vyachintheeth

1.Long time ago  Mahishasura    who was son ,

Of Ramba by doing   strong penance, pleased Lord Brahma,

And from him took the boon that no male  should kill him,

And became   very proud thinking  that  he does not have death.

2.Sa chikshuraadhyar asuri   sametha,

SAkraadhi devaanyudhi padmajam cha  ,

Rudram cha  Vishnum   cha   vijithya naake  ,

Vasan balaadh  yajna hair   jahaara,

2,He  along with Asuras  like Chikshura , in war,

Won over, Indra  and other devas, Brahma 

Shiva  and Vishnu, and stood   in the heaven,

Plundering forcefully   the share of devas in Yajnas,

3.Chiram brusam   daithya nipeedidasthe ,

Devaa  samam  padmaja sankaraabhyaam,

Harim   samam   samethyaasuradoshtya  moochu ,

Sthwaam  samsmaraam  dEvi  muraari raaha.

3.Those Devas who were   troubled   for a long time,

By those  Rakshasas  along  with Brahma   and Shiva,

Approached Hari  and informed about  the evil acts  of Those Asuras,

OH Goddess ., He meditating  on you told them.

4.Suraa vayam   thena   ranethi ghore,

Paraajithaa  daithyavaro  balishta ,

Matho  brusam  pumbirvadhya bhava -,

NNa na  striyo  Yudha   vichakshanaascha.

4.Oh DEvas ,  we were defeated   by him  in a fierce war.,

As that Asura   seems to be  having very great strength.

And his pride has increased as he   cannot be killed by males,

And our  ladies    are   not experts   in war fare.

5.Thejobhirekaa bhavatheeha  nascheth,

Saivasuraan  bhima balaan nihanthaa,

Yadhaa bhvethethadaram   thadiva,

Samprarthayamovathu  no  mahesi .

5.If a lady   is  now born from our  inner luster ,

She only can kill these  asuras who are greatly powerful,

And let us all  o pray so that   this will  happen,

In the   way it should happen.Let the great Goddess protect us.

6.Yevam  harou vakthari  padma jaathaath,

Thejo abhavadh rajasa   raktha varnam,

Shivadabhooth thamasaraipya  varnam,

Neela prabham  sathveekamachyuthaascha.

6.When Lord Vishnu was   telling like this,

A red regal   luster   arose out of  Lord Brahma,

And a base  white luster   came  out of Lord Shiva,

And   a soft blue   luster   came  out of Lord Vishnu

7.Thejamsya  bhoovan   vividhaani sacra-.

Mukhamarobhyo mishatho Akilasya,

Samyogathathaanyachirena maatha,

Stree roopamashta dasa hastha maapu.

7.Similarly the  luster   came out   of Indra  and other devas,

And Oh Goddess  soon, when every body    was seeing,

They alljoined together an d took ,

The form of a lady    with eighteen   hands.

8.Thath thu thwaamaasi shubhadhe mahaala,

Kshmayaakhyaa jagan mohana  mohanangi,

Thwam  hyeva bhakthabhaya dhana   dakshaa,

Bhakthdwahahaam  bheethikari cha  devi.

8,Oh Goddess  who does good, that   was  Mahalakshmi,

Which was   one  beauty   which could attract  ,

Every thing in the world and was only   yourselves,

And definitely you   who grants protetiobn,

To the devotees and scare those   who want to

Cause   trouble   to the devotees.

9.Sadyasthva  muchaischa  krushe attahasam,

Suraa orahrushtaa  vasudhaa chakampe,

Chukshobha   sindhu girayo  vichulr,

Daithyascha   matho maahishaschu kopaa.

9.And immediately that Goddess  shouted with valour,

And Devas  became glad, the earth   trembled,

The ocean became angry, the bridges belonged to skake

And hearing that Mahishasura   who was ,

Proud  became   greatly angry,

10.THwaam sundari   chara mukhaan sa daithyo,

Vijnaaya  kaami   visa sarja dhootham,

Sa cheswarim   daithya gunaan pravakthaa ,

Thwaam nethu kaamo  viphalaidhyamobhooth.

10.That Rakshasa, getting to know   from his spies,

That you are pretty, send you a message of love,

And  he told  about his Rakshasa  Qualities,

In   front of you o is the great goddess,

And though he wanted to carry you off , he was not able to.

11.Pralobhanaisthwamaadha deva   sakthim,

Jnaathwaapi  vaakyairnunethu kama,

Yekaikasa   preshayatheesma dhoothaan,

Thwam kaminim  karthumime na souk.

11.And though  he knew that   you are a divine power,

For attracting you   and possessing you  ,

He sent messengers one after another,

And they could not make you his lover.

12. Avehi  maam  pucha vishaana heenam,

Bhaaram vahantham  mahisham dwipadam,

Himsanthi  maam  swardhi janaasthameva  ,

Rakshaakaree  may shubhadhe  namasthe.

12,I am one who does not have  a tail or horn,

And one carries the  burden and please  know,

That  I am a  bison with two legs and  people,

With avarice are killing me and you are ,

The only one who can    protect me,

OH Goddess  who does good, I am saluting you.
